Curriculum Vitae
Patrick Roberts ist Forschungsgruppenleiter der Max-Planck isoTROPIC Forschungsgruppe. Mithilfe multidisziplinärer Methoden und Forschungsansätze untersucht die Gruppe historische Interaktionen unserer Spezies mit Wäldern und Waldlandschaften entlang der Tropen. Seine akademische Laufbahn schloss er an der Universität Oxford mit einer Promotion in Archäologiewissenschaften ab. Seine Habilitation basierte auf seinem Buch ‘Tropical Forests in Prehistory, History, and Modernity‘ und wurde durch Oxford University Press veröffentlicht. Roberts nahm an zahlreichen UNESCO Naturschutzsymposien teil und leitet aktuell das ERC Starting Grant Projekt ‚PANTROPOCENE‘, welches das Ausmaß präkolonialer und kolonialer Auswirkungen auf tropische Wälder untersucht sowie deren Effekt auf die Erdsysteme im 21. Jahrhundert. Roberts veröffentlichte kürzlich sein neuestes Buch: ‘Jungle: How Tropical Forests Shaped the World and Us‘ und ist Mitbegegründer des ‚Pantropica‘- Forschungsnetzwerks.
Als W2-Forschungsgruppenleiter am Max-Planck-Institut für Menschheitsgeschichte, leitet Roberts ebenfalls das Stabilisotopenlabor, das Stabilisotopenmethoden anwendet und sich der Erforschung des menschlichen Paläoklimas, der Paläoumwelt, der Paläogebiete und der Paläomobilität widmet. Roberts hat eine Reihe von Publikationen veröffentlicht, in denen die Analyse stabiler Isotope in einer Vielzahl von archäologischen Forschungskontexten eingesetzt wird: von der Rekonstruktion der Paläoumweltbedingungen im östlichen und südlichen Afrika, in Südasien und Saudi-Arabien im Zusammenhang mit der Besiedlung durch Homininen während des Pleistozäns bis hin zur Erforschung von Ernährungs- und ökologischen Veränderungen im Zusammenhang mit holozänen Nahrungsproduzenten, Stadtbewohnern und historischen Bevölkerungen. Roberts ist derzeit leitender Wissenschaftler der Abteilung für Archäologie am Max-Planck-Institut für Menschheitsgeschichte. 2021 wurde er mit dem Heinz-Maier-Leibniz-Preis ausgezeichnet, der höchsten Auszeichnung für Nachwuchsforscher in Deutschland. Derzeit ist er auch an der University of Queensland und der University of the Philippines tätig und ist Mitglied der Global Young Academy und der Young Academy of Europe.
