International Application of Archaeological Science Workshop - 2020, May 4-12

With the tremendous success of the 2018 and 2019 events, the Department of Archaeology, Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History is now calling for applications for our 2020 International Application of Archaeological Science Workshop. The workshop will be conducted in the Department’s research and laboratory facilities in Jena, Germany. Note that spaces are highly limited and only select applications will be funded.

The event will run from 4-12 May, 2020. It is designed for new, early stage field researchers wishing to implement new methodologies within countries with under-resourced or poorly funded archaeological science and/or cultural heritage programs. In past years the workshop has included scholars from Kenya, Zambia, Mongolia, Uzbekistan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and Kazakhstan. The workshop sessions will cover discussions across a variety of methods, including quantitative lithic analyses, Geographical Information Systems approaches, palaeoproteomics, ZooMS, stable isotope analysis, metabolite and biomarker studies, palaeobotany, zooarchaeology, human osteology, chronological methods and models, and statistical analysis.

Workshop sessions will be in English, and good (or higher) English language capability is essential to participation in the programme. The programme will cover accommodation costs during the workshop and will reimburse travel costs for selected participants. All software used will be open access, enabling participants to apply learned skills without constraint. We will also focus on methods that can feasibly be implemented outside well-funded laboratories and will discuss field sampling methods.

We will consider applications from qualified candidates based in countries with emerging and developing economies only (as determined by the International Monetary Fund ). Candidates will be selected based on their past scholarly performance, and shared research interests with archaeologists at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History. Interested early career scholars with a PhD or equivalent, and fluency in English are encouraged to apply.

The application deadline is November 10, 2019. Applicants should send (1) a one page (maximum) cover letter describing their research interests and reasons for wanting to participate in the workshop programme, including how participation with Max Planck researchers will benefit their home institution/country; (2) a full academic CV; and (3) where possible, proof of English language fluency (e.g., TOEFL, etc.).

Please email the cover letter and the CV together to the following address by the deadline: Nov. 10, 2019 archsci@shh.mpg.de.
