Biochemistry Laboratory

The Biochemistry Laboratory specializes in generating biomolecular data to investigate ancient human activities and paleo-environments. Our lab work encompasses the targeted detection of specialized (“secondary”) plant and fungal metabolites like terpenes and alkaloids in archaeological artifacts, identification of fecal biomarkers from soil and lake biogeochemical records, and determination of carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios in amino acids across various organic samples. To conduct these analyses, we utilize state-of-the-art wet chemistry facilities such as a clean laboratory along with advanced equipment, including a Gas Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer (Agilent 8890), a Liquid Chromatography System with a Triple Quad Mass Spectrometer (Shimadzu LCMS 8050), and a Gas Chromatograph Combustion Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer (Elementar isoprime visION).
