Lic. Joaquin del Rio
Main Focus
The ear -including all of its three regions- is responsible for our ability to perceive sound. Analyzing the human ear's morphology from an evolutionary and comparative perspective will allow me to gain some insight on how spoken language shaped it's anatomy, or the other way around. Using the latest methods of shape analysis -i.e. 3D geometric morphometrics- I will be able to analyze the morphology of the ear region of both extant and extinct species. This last group is especially interesting, because it includes human ancestors, and I will be able to predict their hearing abilities with a certain degree of confidence.
