Main Focus

Andrea Picin is an archaeologist specialized in lithic technology. His research focuses on the archaeological and evolutionary reconstruction of hunter-gatherer behaviours in Eurasia from the Middle Pleistocene to the Holocene. Through the application of the chaîne opératoire concept, experimental knapping and quantitative methods, Andrea investigates the factors that contributed to the development and substitution of technological strategies in hominin material culture. His research aims to understand the influence of climatic fluctuations and ecological diversity on the emergence of different technical and subsistence adaptations in prehistoric hunter-gatherers. Since 2015, he is co-director with Dr. Manuel Vaquero of the excavation of Abric de la Consagració (Capellades, Spain), an archaeological site characterized by anthropogenic occupations dated to the late Middle and Upper Palaeolithic. He is collaborating on projects investigating the settlement dynamics in the northeast of Iberian Peninsula (Teixoneres Cave, Llenes Cave, Las Fuentes de San Cristóbal), in eastern France (Vergisson Caves) and in Khorramabad Valley – Iran (Kaldar Cave).

Curriculum Vitae

Andrea Picin received a BA in Archaeology from the Università degli Studi di Padova (Italy) in 2005 and a MA in Quaternary Science and Prehistory from the Universitat Rovira I Virgili (Tarragona, Spain) in 2009. In March 2014, he was awarded a Ph.D. in Quaternary Science and Prehistory magna cum laude at the same institution. In September 2014, he received the Postdoctoral Research Fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. His research, undertaken at the Friedrich Schiller Universität Jena, aimed to investigate the hunter-gatherers technological variability in Eastern Germany during the late Middle and Late Pleistocene. During his postdoctoral position at the Department of Prehistory and Early History, he was coordinating and teaching a course on “Quantitative Methods in Archaeology” and on the “Palaeolithic and Mesolithic around the Mediterranean” for postgraduate students. In his current position at the Department of Archaeology, Andrea is exploring the technological adaptations of prehistoric hunter-gatherers to the rainforest environment of South Asia and to the climatic fluctuations in Zambia and Mongolia.
