Dr. Yoolim Kim
Research AssociateMain Focus
My research focuses on the psycholinguistic processing of writing systems, with specific interest in the Korean alphabet, Hangul. As a postdoctoral researcher here in Jena, my work is on developing ways to quantify visual distinctiveness of characters within a graphic system.
Curriculum Vitae
I completed a BA in Cognitive and Linguistic Sciences at Wellesley College (2012), after which I went on to complete an MPhil in General Linguistics and Comparative Philology, within the Faculty of Linguistics, Philology, and Phonetics, at the University of Oxford (2015). I then completed my PhD in Psycholinguistics in the Language and Brain Laboratory, within the same faculty at Oxford (2019). My doctoral research investigated the cross-script effects of Chinese characters on the semantic processing of Korean.
I also work with the Cultural Brain Group, within the
Department of Psychology of Language, at the Max Planck Institute for
Psycholinguistics (Nijmegen), where we are currently investigating the effects of statistical regularities of a script on learnability.
