MINT-Festival Jena: Exploring the past with "invisible" traces

The lecture is aimed at elementary school students and shows the methods with which it is possible for us today to explore the past. For a long time, bones, pottery shards or stone tools were the sources for reconstructions of past living worlds. Biomolecular archaeology enables us to examine even the smallest remains and traces, some of which are no longer visible to the naked eye. These molecular traces can be deposited in vessels and tartar, but can also be present in sediments or bones. Their analysis enables studies on eating and drinking habits, subsistence, mobility and sedentariness, kinship relationships as well as environmental and climatic reconstructions.
