Main Focus

I'm an anthropologist working at the intersection of anthropology, demography and evolution. My main area of interest is reproductive behavior and its effects on population dynamics and cultural evolution. My work combines approaches from the humanities and social sciences and tries to bridge micro and macro levels of analysis.

To date I have focused on evolutionary explanations of the demographic transition to low fertility, based on anthropological research in 22 rural communities in Poland, and on cross-cultural and theoretical projects in this area.

Since 2015 I have been doing fieldwork in small-scale communities in Vanuatu where I manage an interdisciplinary project involving linguists, geneticists, archaeologists, psychologists and political scientists. Please see our webpage for more details http://www.shh.mpg.de/456217/vanuatu-languages-lifeways.

From September 2019 I will be leading an Independent Max Planck Research Group at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, Leipzig, on the topic of "The Cultural Evolution of Reproduction".
