Prehistory and Societal Development in Eastern Asia

A joint one-day workshop is being held between the Department of Archaeology, Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History (MPI-SHH) and the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology (IVPP), Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Asia is the Earth's largest and most populous continent today, though we know little about the evolutionary history of human cultures over the long term. The spread of peoples, plants and animals across Asia are of great interest to archaeologists and earth scientists. In recent years, the MPI-SHH and the IVPP have been conducting interdisciplinary archaeological field work and laboratory research on sites across Asia, including in Eastern Asia. This workshop will bring together researchers from the MPI-SHH and the IVPP in order to discuss diverse topics such as human dispersals, cultural connections, domestication processes, and the role of climate change in influencing human palaeodemography and societal development. The latest results of field and laboratory work will be presented, providing the stimulus to discuss future collaborations.
